After she helps Zuko escape from the Boiling Rock, Mai confronts Azula with the statement “I love Zuko more than I fear you.” In this version of events, however, Ty Lee doesn’t intercede on Mai’s behalf. Azula ends up killing her with a well-placed lightning bolt - but Mai doesn’t pass away peacefully. Tormented by her unresolved love for Zuko and her feelings of abandonment and betrayal, she walks the Earth as a shade. She follows unseen in his footsteps, a lonely ghost haunting the man who cannot see her and can never be with her, even if she is with him.AANG:
After getting shot through by Azula’s lightning bolt at the end of season 2, both Aang and the Avatar spirit die. Katara uses the spirit oasis water to resurrect him - however, she only has enough healing energy to bring back 1 life. Since the Avatar spirit is more important to the survival of the world, it is revived. Aang himself remains dead, and the Avatar spirit comes to inhabit the lifeless corpse. Thus, the power of the Avatar spirit lives on, untempered by any sort of humanity. Aang becomes a sort of supremely destructive zombie, driven only to wander and fight, without the capability to heal - yet without the ability to die. The Avatar spirit cannot reincarnate into the next nation in the cycle because, hey, you can’t kill what’s already dead.KATARA:
A year after the events of ATLA, Katara returns to the Swamp to learn more about botanical waterbending - she hopes to learn from the vine-bending master there. Unbeknownst to her, however, the Swamp is slowly being polluted by poisonous sludge from a fire nation factory upstream - one of the many that have been converted to civilian-owned enterprises since the war’s end. Sickened and unable to defend itself, the Spirit of the Swamp grows desperate. Finally, seeing no other option, it possesses Katara and uses her to destroy the factory. While the Spirit waits to recover, it continues controlling her like some creepy marionette, attacking anyone who dares trespass within its borders…TOPH:
In this version of events, Sokka, Aang, and Katara are not able to escape the lost library in time, and it sinks beneath the sands of the desert, leaving Toph alone in the middle of a vast wasteland. Exhausted, thirsty, and still in shock over the disappearance of her friends, Toph wanders through the desert until she finally succumbs to heat stroke and loses consciousness. Shortly afterward, a group of roaming sand benders find the seemingly lifeless girl half buried in a dune. Assuming the worst, they do what they can, and hurriedly wrap her in a shroud of bandages and deposit her in an empty sarcophagus in one of their tombs. Revived by the cool damp of the tomb, Toph awakens and emerges from her final resting place, dead set on following the sand-benders and doing whatever is necessary to save herself and her friends
